So the louvers and trim on my DeLorean are finally black again! It was pretty much an all day project, but it was DEFINITELY worth it! I had a hard time finding the SEM Trim Black for sale locally, so I tried the second choice: Duplicolor Black Trim. It looks pretty good. So after finishing up, my dad and I went to a local automotive paint shop to see about matching the dark gray wheel color. While we were there, I saw that they carried the full line of SEM. :( Seriously, less than an hour after finishing, I find what I had been looking for. Oh well, I bought two cans and will be going over the louvers again with it, since the Duplicolor isn't all that great and you can see the spray pattern from certain angles (still a huge improvement, though!) Now I have to get the fascias re-painted, because now they really look bad!
How the louvers looked before painting.
I painted them on the car, because I didn't want to have to mess with re-adjusting the louvers again.
The finished product (mostly, still going to go over them with the SEM Trim Black)
The windshield trim is also black again! (And look, more scratches to remove on the door)
So much better!
Also painted the rest of the trim while we were at it.
I found that the shop also had the black interior dye that I need to re-dye my interior pieces black. That's a good thing, because I actually ordered most of my new black interior over the last couple of days!!! So far I have ordered a good condition original black binnacle, a new black DMCH dash, new glove box lid, new black seat covers, new shift boot and a new stainless steel shifter ball! I was thinking about going with a two-tone interior for a while and leaving the carpets gray, but the more I think about it I would really love to change the carpets, too, and finish it all at the same time. The only problem is that I'm not really sure I can afford $800 for molded carpets after buying all of the other parts! I mean, I CAN, but I really shouldn't. Knowing me, though, I will have it ordered by tomorrow. I know, I'm bad, but it will be soooo worth it! My original carpets are in really good condition, so I might try to sell them and make back some of the costs. I haven't decided what I'm going to do about the headliner yet, but I'm thinking about just buying some generic dark gray material and doing it myself until I can afford to buy the new headliners from DMCH (I know they are expensive, but I want it to be perfect).
Tomorrow I am going to re-brush as much of the stainless as I can to get rid of as many cross grain scratches as possible, and also try to install my new black side stripe! I'll be working all day, but hopefully I'll get those two items knocked of the to-do list! A little teaser for tomorrow:
